Abstract

In primary prevention, a healthy diet, regular physical activity and a healthy body weight are recommended to reduce the risk of tumour disease. In follow-up care, these factors are still recommended provided the patients can implement them. As a guide, patients can follow the recommendations of the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) to reduce the risk of recurrence. In this case, individual counselling by trained nutrition and exercise specialists (e.g. dieticians, ecotrophologists, sports scientists) may be advisable to enable concrete recommendations targeting the respective tumour entity or specific side effects. The intention of this article is to give an overview of the importance of nutritional therapy and physical activity, including the most important current recommendations in the oncology setting. This work is based on a selective literature search in the PubMed database on the relevance of a healthy diet and physical activity in primary prevention and follow-up in relation to cancer.
