Research Interests
My research is focused on development, plasticity and degeneration of the nervous system. In the last years, I investigated different aspects of neuroserpin, a serine protease inhibitor of the central and peripheral nervous system. Neuroserpin regulates the activity of the serine protease tissue plasminogen activator, and is critically involved in the pathophysiology of stroke, epilepsy, schizophrenia and fear disorders. Together with my collaborators, I demonstrated a role for neuroserpin in developmental neurogenesis, in maturation of dendritic spines during synaptogenesis and in synaptic plasticity. Moreover, I investigated pathomechanisms of a neurodegenerative disease called Familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB), caused by point mutations in neuroserpin and characterized by intraneuronal deposition of neuroserpin polymers leading to neuronal death and dementia.
