Repronormativität und reproduktive Gerechtigkeit - Eine interdisziplinäre Analyse zur Fortpflanzung im Kontext von Trans

Abstract

Introduction In the context of transgender, questions about reproduction have been gaining relevance for about two decades. This involves the desire for children and fertility preservation as well as pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Influential here, however, are not only the reproductive medical options, but also the barriers shaped by repronormativity that prevent trans and non-cis persons from realizing their desire to have children or at least considerably complicate this.

Objectives Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this article inquires into the opportunities and limitations of reproduction in trans persons.

Methods First, the term repronormativity will be introduced and the concept of reproductive justice will be elaborated. This conceptual analysis is complemented by a narrative literature review incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives: Legal and reproductive medicine as well as psychological and sociological contributions are included.

Results We show how repronormative conceptions and legal regulations restrict and discriminate against non-cis persons in their reproductive capacities. Building on the current state of empirical research on reproduction among trans persons, we review the practical options for fertility preservation in the context of transgender.

Conclusion Based on the findings, we argue for trans persons to be granted the same reproductive rights as cis persons. In sum, we seek to promote a public discussion on repronormativity and reproductive justice that will open up and ease reproduction for queer people in a sustainable way.
