E-Scooter-Fahren unter Alkoholeinfluss - ein zu vernachlässigender Einzelfall bei Frauen?

Abstract

Two and a half years alter the start of the widespread provision of e-scooters by rental services, an increase in the use of them under the influence of alcohol and associated accidents has been observed. This study aims to provide an overview of the relevance of drunken e-scooter riders to road traffic and the health care system, addressing gender differences. Retrospectively, the data of persons who were controlled by the police within 1.5 years due to driving an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol in the Hamburg city area with subsequent blood alcohol content (BAC) analysis were included. Additionally, the data of the e-scooter drivers treated by the Traumatology Department of the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf as a result of an accident were also screened for the patient's injury patterns. Alcoholized e-scooter drivers were predominantly male. On average, the female subjects had a lower blood alcohol concentration and were less often above the 1.1 ‰ limit. Males had more frequent and severe injuries to the head and face (89.7 % versus 72.0 %), whereas females had more frequent injuries to the extremities (64 % versus 39.7 %). None of the patients were wearing a helmet. Both the accidents and the traffic offenses occurred more frequently on weekends and in the late evening and night hours. E-scooter riders driving under the influence of alcohol are relevant to the public road traffic and the health care system. Increased awareness about possible legal and physical consequences should be pursued and, if necessary, supplemented by further measures such as a helmet requirement or mandatory a driver's licenses.
