Abstract

Aim To explore the impact of home specialist palliative care
teams (SAPV) introduced in 2007 on the work of outpatient
hospice services (AHD).
Methodology In 2015, AHD were surveyed on changes in
the perception of their work and of expectations towards
hospice work, as well as on collaboration with SAPV teams.
Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, free text
entries were summarised and analysed using content analysis.
Results 214 AHD for adults participated. The majority
reported a positive impact on the perception of hospice
work. Almost all AHDs had experienced the collaboration
with SAPV teams as good. It was reported that SAPV improved
outpatient palliative care, and had a modifying impact
on cooperation in the care network and requests for
accompaniment, the view on and expectations of AHD contributions.
Competition can arise if, for example, tasks overlap
and AHD services feel displaced.
Conclusions Close cooperation of health care professionals
and voluntary staff in hospice and palliative care leads to an
improvement in the care of seriously ill and dying patients
and their relatives in the context of SAPV. The role and tasks
of voluntary hospice work must be adequately communicated
in the education and qualification programmes for
palliative care. Mutual views on cooperation and possible
competition should be explored also from the perspectives
of SAPV teams, patients and their relatives.
