N2 - It is possible to perform percutaneous Doppler ultrasonic flow measurements in the vertebral artery below its curvature over the atlas. Criteria supporting the subclavian-steal syndrome are (I) red side, (2) slowing of blood flow in the vertebral artery after compression of the axillary artery on the same side, and (3) delayed pulse in the axillary artery of the diseased compared with the normal side.
