Abstract

Background: This review article written by members of the Junges Forum of the German Society of Vascular Surgery (DGG) analyses the needs and expectations of vascular surgery residents in Germany. It focusses on the shortage of vascular surgeons in training, the change of generations with the associated clash of generations and the current state of the further training program for the next generation of vascular surgeons in Germany. This was assessed by an online survey by the Junges Forum among 75 young vascular surgeons in 2017. Thus the authors want to provide solutions to shape the future of the vascular surgery landscape in Germany. Results: The young generation would like to have forecast reliability, a structured surgical further education and regular feedback. Over 70% of the participants were content with their work situation in general; however, the survey revealed that there are deficits especially in the implementation of essential structures, such as structured education and compatibility of family and work. Conclusion: In order to attract young people to a career in vascular surgery, the Junges Forum and the DGG steering committee should focus on the implementation, constant improvement and quality control of these essential strategies. The theme of the 2017 DGG meeting “committed to young academics” is designed to be a message dedicated to young vascular surgeons towards an innovative and future-oriented vascular surgery in Germany.
