Abstract

Almost half of all doctors of the OECD member countries
are female. In Germany about two thirds of the medical
degree graduates are female. Yet there are many obstacles
in the career paths of female doctors. The purpose of this
article is to examine the impact of stress (up to burnout)
of female residents with and without children on their career
satisfaction. Data acquisition and analysis was carried out
within the multi-centric and prospective KarMed study.
21 percent of the participating female doctors claimed that
residency and familiy were incompatible. Stress perception
of female residents with and without children was
significantly different. A regression analysis showed that
emotional exhaustion, the amount of personal accomplishment,
and the subjective assessment of compatibility of
residency and family were associated with the residents’
career satisfaction.
