N2 - Ten years ago the German Vascular Society established an innovative approach by introducing the vascular assistant DGG® as a supporting role to vascular surgeons. As the daily work contents were increasingly dictated by implementing non-physician workload, the need was urgent to change this development and thereby regain attractiveness for the profession. With this new non-academic profession the vascular assistant is able to assist in operations and, e.g.-give support in diagnostic evaluations or work as a study nurse. This article gives a resumee and presents the results of a survey of the currently active vascular assistants.
