N2 - Background: Many patients suffering from thrombosis of pelvic and limb veins develop a postthrombotic syndrome. Besides the well-known best conservative medicinal treatment options there are also some established open surgical procedures to ease patient suffering and prevent complications, such as recurrent venous ulceration. Objective: This article presents the most common open surgical procedures for the treatment of postthrombotic syndrome in a summarizing review. The focus is mostly on the presentation of venous valve reconstruction procedures. Material and methods: A selective review of the literature was carried out and the experiences gained at this clinic were incorporated into this article. Results and conclusion: Open surgical procedures for the treatment of postthrombotic syndrome are an alternative for patients with unsatisfactory results after conservative or endovascular treatment. Evidence-based knowledge from studies is limited so that further investigations are required.
