Conversion disorders, their diagnosis and treatment, are a challenge for the health system, patients and families. The magnitude of disability and the helplessness that is often associated with the disorder may lead to frustration in patients and clinicians. The core feature of conversion disorder is a loss or alteration of physical functioning that is not referable to any organic lesion. Movement disorders, loss of sensory and psychogenic seizures are common manifestations in pediatrics. Etiology is still not totally explained. Girls (4-5:1) between 10 and 16 years seem to be the most affected. Instead of a diagnosis of exclusion a careful examination with necessary investigations should soon consider “positive criteria” of conversion disorders. A strong cooperation between pediatrics and child and adolescents psychiatry is recommended. The beginning of a specific treatment as soon as possible has been associated with good prognosis. Adolescents with conversion symptoms of high frequency or chronic psychosocial aversities can have high risk of developing psychiatric or personality disorders.
