N2 - Cerebellar atrophy following severe head injury in infants has been described in imaging studies. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl who died of accidental hypothermia. Three weeks before, she had sustained head injury after falling on the back of her head with linear fracture of the occipital bone. Neuropathological examination of the girl's brain revealed cerebellar atrophy with specific loss of Purkinje cells. We present findings of detailed neuropathological studies and discuss possible mechanisms of posttraumatic cerebellar atrophy. To the best of our knowledge, cerebellar atrophy following mild head injury in man has not been described morphologically so far.
